It was in 1968 that astronauts first drew near the moon, and it will be early this year (if all goes as planned) that a crew will return. It will take the crew farther from Earth than any human beings have ever traveled before. The Apollo 13 spacecraft flew a similar circumlunar route, reaching 158 miles beyond the far side of the moon at its most remote remove. For 55 years, that crew held the distance record, but Artemis Il will smash it when the spacecraft travels a whopping 4,700 miles beyond the lunar backside. From that distance, the crew will be able to take dramatic photographs of the sphere of the Earth and the sphere of the moon in the same frame.
