Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, nearly a century after Canada was formed. This was despite many Newfoundlanders desiring to become the 49th state of U.S.
Newfoundland has a very distinct history. It is one of the oldest European colonies in the Americas, with its capital, St. John's, being established in 1583. Its age and proximity to Britain (St. John's is closer to Milan than Vancouver) resulted in a different culture emerging.
